Neighbourhood-based renovation on Academy Street

Tallinn is taking a major step towards a greener and more connected urban space with the launch of SOFTacademy, a neighbourhood-based renovation project. For the first time, Tallinn’s renovation project focuses on actively involving residents in the development of their neighbourhoods. The pilot area of the project is located in Mustamäe, covering the buildings at Akadeemia st. 4, 6, 14 and 22 and the courtyard between the buildings.

The buildings and courtyards of the pilot area will be completely renovated in cooperation with local residents and project partners, with the aim of revitalising the area around the apartment buildings and creating new opportunities for residents to spend quality time. In addition to the modernisation of the buildings, a cosy and modern outdoor space will be created where the community can enjoy spending time together.

Project objective – an engagement model for municipalities
SOFTacademy aims to develop and test a collaborative engagement model to help municipalities accelerate the renovation of prefabricated buildings. The model aims to revitalise neighbourhoods by working with housing associations and using combinable standard elements to improve both the buildings and the space between them.

Expected results – a fully renovated Mustamäe quarter
The final result of the project will be a demonstration solution comprising four fully renovated buildings (Akadeemia tee 4, 6, 14 and 22) and the space between them in Mustamäe Quarter. Housing associations will be involved at every stage, providing them with support to implement innovative and environmentally friendly solutions. The associations will also participate in the planning and design of the city-owned inter-neighbourhood area to create a functional and sustainable living environment for the community.

All the solutions, both in the design of the buildings and in the landscape, are based on the ideas of the New European Construction Era, the principles of the circular economy and the objectives of sustainable renovation. SOFTacademy shows the way in which residents of Tallinn’s apartment buildings can become an integral part of a greener, modern city through modern renovation solutions and community engagement.
